— Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) & Scar Work —
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) has a powerful cleansing, relaxing, pain relieving & immunological effects. In its manual form, it is a gentle, flowing, rhythmic massage and can be applied to a wide range of pathologies to great effect.
MLD is used primarily to promote optimal functioning of the lymphatic vessels that lead to the circulatory system. The techniques facilitate in the removal of metabolic waste, excess water, toxins, bacteria, large protein molecules & foreign substance from tissues.
MLD relaxes the sympathetic nervous system, reduces pain and enhances the activity of the immune system. It is effective in the wide variety of problems including –
- Oedema/Swelling
- Skin Disorders
- Headaches
- Skin Congestion
- Sprains & Aches
- Stress
- Digestive Disorders
- Bloating
- immuno-suppressant or auto immune conditions
- Pre & Post Surgery Recovery (to remove tissue congestion and reduce scar formation)
It is particularly useful as part of post mastectomy therapy – to reduce Oedema & Fibrosis & relieve pain and tension as well as aid in fluid retention build up as a result of lymph node removal. Our Therapist has also undertaken training in Advanced post Operative care for both cosmetic and medical procedures, as well as being oncology trained in complementary therapies to degree level; offering pre and post surgery treatments, advice, compression fitting and Sharon wheelers scar Therapy practitioner Training.
- Mld can improve energy levels through water retention, toxin removal & aid in detoxification.
- Build Immunity.
MLD is an extremely relaxing treatment due to the gentle & relaxing rhythmic movements and can be used as a general wellbeing treatment.
For those with compromised immune systems or Lymphoedema, we may initially advise shorter sessions. This will be discussed in your initial consultation treatment. To treat a pathological condition it is advised to have a course of sessions relatively close together and we would recommend booking a lymphedema therapy session. This is where a treatment plan is devised and treatment plan put in place to treat a condition which effects your lymphatic system.
We do also advise booking a post operative Mld for those who have undergone surgery (even if this isnt recent). This will allow us to asses scar tissue & fascia (which can effect drainage) as well as apply our post operative knowledge for you to receive the best results from your manual lymphatic treatment. If we think you do not need this extended treatment time we will discuss and advise this with you.

Sharon Wheelers ScarWork (TM)
ScarWork (sharon wheelers scar work TM) promotes the healing, integration and movement of both old and new scars. It uses gentle touch techniques on the skin and underlying fascia to change how the scar looks, feels and moves.
Although our bodies have a natural healing response to injury, a scar will always be less functional than the tissue surrounding it. This can cause the formation of lumps, dips, gaps or raised areas, which in turn can effect how we move. No matter how small or big a scar is, it is important to have it worked on to improve fascia, function and optimise lymph drainage which can be disrupted by scar tissue. It is also never too late to start working on a scar, with the right faciliation & knowledge, we can help support fascia move back to where its supposed to be.
- Scar therapy can be beneficial if your scar is causing pain, discomfort, inflammation, numbness, is extra sensitive or restricting movement. Our aim is to facilitate the fascia to find its way home and work as a three dimensional web of facia again. Change can be rapid and extensive and can sometimes be achieved in one session, other scars can take several sessions but results are generally felt and seen in the session.
ScarWork is non-invasive and takes place without the use of anaesthetic, chemicals, needles or peels. Session are generally between 30 – 60 mins with a 60 minute initial session which will include a consultation to appropriately address your needs. The treatment is light and casual and rarely painful, even for new scars. We can change and have a positive impact on very old scars too, there is no time limit for change.
work on a scar can contribute to whole body release and integration and historic memories and emotions can sometimes be felt. Once the tissues have been facilitated to where they are supposed to be, improvements are usually permanent and progressive towards better body integration and function.
To work on acute scars we require you to be signed off by your surgeon and generally a minimum of 8 weeks post surgery. Scars need to be healed, and free from infection. We will not commence work infected or weeping scars. we generally advise a 3 week gaps between scar work sessions.
Scar work can also be helpful from internal scar tissue and disrupted fascia as a result of conditions like endometriosis where many have found reduced pain and discomfort as result of scar & fascia work.
Hannah has received specialist training to obtain qualifications in Sharon wheelers scar work by Jan Trewartha.
sessions can be booked as standalone treatments on the app. If we integrate these into your Mld Sessions, these will be discussed with you and generally we will need to book the longer Mld treatments for this combined therapy.
